About the garden

Our farmers planting trees at the garden in Scherpenzeel
Our first workday on the land

We are a group of five young, first-generation farmers who have the exciting opportunity to start a small Community Supported Agriculture project on 0,5 hectares in Scherpenzeel, in the centre of the country. We believe that food and farming is a way to reconnect people to nature, eachother and their environment. Diverse and nature-inclusive farming are a crucial part of a more just and sustainable postcapitalist society!

This project exists very much because of our friends at Tuinen van de Egel. Our name connects us to de Egel, as well as to the roodborstje who welcomed us while planting trees on our first workday on-site. It’s also a reminder, this land will never be “ours” - we are visitors in the Tuinen van het Roodborstje.

We hope that in these gardens, we will not only grow food but help a biodiverse habitat to flourish for human and more-than-human life.

02 / Vegetable subscription

Weekly vegetables

From May to December, we aim to provide our members with a weekly crate of freshly harvested, organic vegetables, herbs and flowers. We aim for an average of six different crops per crate. Expect more leafy greens and salad vegetables in spring; pumpkins, courgettes and tomatoes come later in the season.

We offer two sizes: small for one to two people and large for two to three, depending on how much you cook and how much of your diet is vegetable-based. Pick-up is in Amsterdam or Wageningen. The season lasts around 28 to 32 weeks, depending on growing conditions.

How membership works

As a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project, we build a direct, trust-based relationship between farmers and members. Members support the farm for a whole season and share both its risks and its harvest.

01

An annual contribution

At the beginning of the season, you make one financial contribution. This covers upfront costs for compost, seeds and seedlings, and our income for the year. It allows us to plan before the harvest begins.

02

A weekly vegetable crate

In return, you receive a weekly crate of vegetables from the garden. What we harvest changes with the season. We harvest on the day of delivery, and you collect your crate in Amsterdam or Wageningen.

03

Solidarity and shared risk

Farmers and members share both the risks and the harvest of the season. We use a solidarity pricing system with contributions based on income and what you can afford. Our members are always welcome to join us at the gardens. Solidarity pricing details

Why we farm this way

Food is political

The industrial food system makes access to food dependent on the exploitation of workers and damage to ecosystems. Seed, pesticide and fertilizer companies have colonial histories and use neocolonial practices to make farmers dependent on them.

We think access to ethically grown, environmentally sane and nutritious food is a basic right. We see Tuinen van het Roodborstje as an experiment in actively building the alternatives we need for a postcapitalist future. Diverse, nature-inclusive farming is part of that work.
